Refinancing without a large out-of-pocket cost

QuestionsRefinancing without a large out-of-pocket cost

I’m looking to refinance my current mortgage, plus get rid of a home equity line (about 14k) which I wish I had never gotten in the first place. I was approached by my current mortgage company, and everything seemed to be going great. My payment for the new mortgage would be just about what I’m paying now. Then I was asked to pull out a credit card for about $ 500 to pay for a credit report and appraisal. My wife has been out of work for almost two years now, and money is pretty tight. I can’t really afford this kind of expense, especially if I don’t know if the refinance loan will be approved or not. I’ve been through refinances before and I don’t remember having to come up with a large out-of-pocket cost. Is this standard for refinancing now?
