How do you make a perfume?

Perfume is an absolutely fascinating product which seems to be able to multiply ad infinitum. Indeed, today, we can no longer count the number of scented creations coming to decorate your shelves in order to satisfy your wildest desires. The biggest noses around the world are helping to flesh out technological advances in order to develop ever more successful products. But then, what about the techniques for making your favorite fragrances ?

Perfumer, a creative work above all

Like the elaboration of a literary work or a painting, perfume is a product created from scratch that requires extraordinary inventiveness and artistic soul. This is also why the nose job is reserved for very few elected officials. They are able to memorize up to 5000 different scents and assemble them in order to develop the most beautiful perfumes. Perfumery is thus located halfway between artistic creation and the work of a chemist. Each perfume is then composed of three different parts called the olfactory notes. The latter evolve from the top notes, lighter, towards the base notes, more sustained, while passing through the heart notes. This assembly corresponds to what is called the scented base.

The different manufacturing techniques of the scented base

Also, after having defined the precise recipe for their perfumes, the perfumers will move on to their development. Different techniques are then used depending on the ingredients required to produce the final product. Distillation is a very frequently used means. The latter consists in creating fragrant water vapor obtained from plant elements. A settling mechanism then makes it possible to dissociate the different odorous components of the water until the absolute is obtained. Extraction, on the other hand, is an even simpler method. It consists of infusing plant materials in water and solvent. The perfumer then waits for the solvent to evaporate and recovers a kind of thick ointment which he then dilutes with alcohol until the perfume is obtained. Expression is another process which is rather reserved for fruit peels. It consists of squeezing, settling and filtering the raw material. Finally, also know that a good number of natural elements are fully reproduced in a synthetic way in the laboratory.

Obtaining the finished product

Once the perfumed base has been made, it is advisable to add a variable quantity of alcohol to it so as to obtain the final concentration of the final juice. So, know that if a perfume contains very little alcohol, an eau de toilette, on the other hand, contains much more. It is then advisable to let everything macerate, generally for a fortnight, until the mixture stabilizes. This crucial step allows the perfume to take all its power. The mixture is then cooled so as to remove all the elements which could disturb the perfume. Finally, it is at this moment that the material obtained is bottled to be sold in your perfumeries. You are now unbeatable on the different stages of the manufacture of your favorite fragrances !
