Male Pride, when Jean-Paul Gaultier’s iconic perfume advocates sexual freedom

Jean-Paul Gaultier is a famous couturier who has never hesitated to venture where no one really dares to go. However, in 2020, he once again proves to us the strength and eccentricity of his whole personality. This time, Jean-Paul Gaultier decided to reinvent his emblematic fragrance Le Mâle, initially designed in 1995, to make Le Mâle Pride, a fragrance in support of the homosexual cause. Presented in a multicolored bottle, Le Mâle promises to delight collectors and LBGTs alike. On the scent side, however, it remains essentially the same as its predecessors.

Le Mâle Pride, a fragrance identical to the previous Mâle by Jean-Paul Gaultier

In 1995, Jean-Paul Gaultier gave birth to an unexpected masculine coquetry. The Male appeared as a sort of UFO in the men’s perfume department. He alone embodied the whole paradox between strength and fragility. Unconventional and very original, he dared to venture into an unusual territory, offering us in passing an oriental and aromatic essence, between tradition and modernity. Since then, Le Mâle by Jean-Paul Gaultier has become a true legend! It is still one of the best-selling perfumes on the planet. In its Le Mâle Pride version, it preserves its original scent. It soars on fresh and sparkling top notes of bergamot, orange blossom and mint. For a little and one would almost believe that it is about a mentholated diabolo worthy of our childhood! Then, the star of this perfume enters the scene: lavender deploys here its floral and Mediterranean breath. Associated with many spices such as cumin, cardamom or cinnamon, it does not lack temperament! Little by little, Jean-Paul Gaultier’s Le Mâle Pride becomes sweeter, deploying an exotic and animal breath of vanilla and musk. It all ends with a woody and virile base of sandalwood, cedar and tonka bean.

From then on, all that remains for us to do is discover the new bottle by Jean-Paul Gaultier… As in the past, Le Mâle Pridecomes in a bottle shaped like a male bust. Very athletic, this glass figure has traded in his old blue sailor top for the iconic rainbow flag of the homosexual community. As a reminder, it has been a symbol of the LGBT community since 1978, evocative of peace, diversity and harmony. If Jean-Paul Gaultier has chosen to address homosexuals around the world, it is quite simply because he is personally concerned by this clause. “I understood very early on that I preferred boys, seeing Romeo and Juliet by Franco Zeffirelli. It is true that I was as attracted to Olivia Hussey as to Leonard Whiting, he delivers. But he was causing me more things. There’s also this scene in The Fury of Living where James Dean and another actor roll around on the floor.
