Options for better fiscal performance: the spouses do not work in 2006?

We have always filed our taxes jointly, but my wife does not work in 2006 to take our one year old baby. Which option (s) we would get the best performance? Should we continue to produce “married filing together” or do I file married but filing separately “and pretend that my wife and dependent children? We have a mortgage and student. If my wife the same file even though they have zero dollars in 2006? My income in 2006 was $ 70k. All tips to maximize our revenues for this year would be very grateful.
