Is it normal to receive subpoenas in the mail from a debt collector?

My Husband and I are going through debt settlement to clear up some really dumb mistakes we made financially. His place of employment recently received a document through the mail from a debt collection agency that said “Subpoena’ on it asking for his employment history and earnings, etc. Is this just a scare tactic that can be ignored or is it real?
I should add that the debt collection agency is a lawyer’s office and they have gone to court, aren’t subpoenas supposed to be served in person by an officer of the court and not in the mail?
