Does having bills in your name really improve your credit?

Every single site listing ‘easy ways to improve your credit score’ claims having your name on your bills is a great way to do so, but doesn’t say anything more than that. How much of an impact does paying bills in your name actually have? My friend has had his name on bills* for the past four years and absolutely nothing has happened to his credit score; it hasn’t changed at all.

*This is the only (supposedly) credit-impacting thing he’s been doing
