Do medical bills go against your credit score?

I’ve been trying to tell my mother-in-law that my husband and I need to pay our medical bills now that we are getting better financially (all of which are in collections since we have yet to pay any). All she keeps saying is “no no no don’t pay your medical bills because they never affect your credit so it’s not something you need to worry about” That just confuses me a little because we are in collections for all of our medical bills which are getting close to equaling $ 6000 dollars, so how is that not affecting my credit? And why is she telling me not to pay my bills???? Do they really not affect your credit at all? That just seems way too good to be true. Please help.
