Credit Scored Dropped?

I subscribe to TrueCredit and noticed yesterday that my “score” dropped 24 points within one month. Three accounts were removed from the credit report; however, these were negative listings. The only other thing that has changed is that I now owe less on all my other debts. Also, because of these accounts being removed, on my Equifax report it went up 14 points and Experian stayed the same. Is this normal for entries over seven years?
(is it just me or is anyone else beginning to think that these credit reporting agencies are a bunch of scam artists too.)
For all my effort in trying to clean up my credit report, it seems that the more I pay off, or have negative items deleted, the worse my credit score is becomming.
Is there anything else I should be doing to improve my credit score that would increase it instead of making it decrease?
all negatives that were deleted were around the 7 1/2 year mark (late payments/accounts were closed 7 1/2 years ago). The current debt that I am paying down is all current (no lates, etc.).
