Can security deposit charges be put on your credit?

I understand that when you move out, if the apartment you were leasing is not in move out condition the landlord can use your security deposit for the repairs. They can also charge you for any other damages that are not covered by the security deposit. But I was wondering if it is legal for them to put those charges on your credit without any written notice? I have heard of this happening to people before. they would move out and months later see that they have these charges on their credit reports. I thought the landlord had to give you an itemized list of the repairs and charges for them.
