We have a gargantuan debt because of profligate overspending and fiscal irresponsibility by the Republicans over the last 8 years. Yet they say cut taxes, which has the effect of reducing tax income in the hopes of stimulating the economy. Since we’re spending untold $ billions on interest payments to the Chinese, Saudis and Europeans who hold our debt, and since these monies never come back to us, doesn’t it make sense to reduce the debt? So what’s unpatriotic about buying down the debt? I know, I know, Republicans will say that raising taxes will kill the economy. But I don’t buy that argument when you raise taxes on the top 1% that make 90% of the money.
